A Featured Website: The Stories behind Rare Historic Photographs

The site Rare Historic Photographs is an educational site showcasing history through iconic photographs.

Have you ever wondered the circumstances of some photos? The story behind them? This site tries to capture some of the story behind some very famous photos.

Have you ever wondered about the story behind the V-J Day Times Square Kiss? Or the famous photo of Albert Einstein sticking out his tongue?

Many of the photos are from WWI and WWII.  Some pictures are in color and others are in black and white.

“Be a witness to the events that changed the mankind. The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

The website/blog exclusively dedicated to historical and rare photographs. Each historical photograph has a story to tell, each of them documents a major event in human history, each photo is a way to grasp the full meaning of the past.

A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the saying goes. Through pictures, we can be in the room with Stalin or on the battlefield with a German soldier during the Battle of Stalingrad. We can observe the thousand yard stare of a shell shocked soldier, we can witness a pile of dead bodies in the aftermath of the Holocaust, we can feel the destruction of Berlin, we can stare the horror of the atomic bombing, we can see the death on the trenches of the World War One or we can feel the stress of an unemployed man standing in line at a soup kitchen during the Great Depression.

The word history comes from the Greek word historía which means “to learn or know by inquiry”. History is important because it helps us to understand the present. On the articles displayed in our blog, we encourage you to probe, dispute, dig deeper, inquire. History is not static. It’s fluid. It changes and grows and becomes richer and more complex when any individual interacts with it.

We have given the historical context for every photograph we have shared. Each photo is accompanied by its historical description, the circumstances, the date the photo was taken, the photographer’s name (when that’s possible) and the copyright holder (if that’s possible too). Also each photo is posted in its best resolution available. We put a lot of effort in writing a factual, correct and informative article. Our blog is updated almost on daily basis.
